Town and surroundings

Dunajská Streda lies in the central part of the Danube flatlands, on the Rye Island. It is justly considered to be the heart of the Rye Island, not only for its position but also for its beauty, dynamics, qualitative services and the benign inhabitants.
The oldest written reference to the town dates back to years 1162—1172. From the 16th century the town has been developing as a ruler townlet with market and craft fair rights. It has developed into a significant economic and trade center of the Rye Island. Important grain markets and beef cattle craft fairs took place here from the 18th century. The Rye Island´s craft fair (Žitnoostrovsky jarmok), that is held annualy in September, continues in this tradition. Ármin Vámbéry (1832-1913), the famous orientalist and traveler, was born here.
The town is a modern centre of active tourism on the Rye Island.

Surroundings

The South-West part of Slovakia comprises a plain territorial unit called the Danube Lawland (Podunajská nížina). It touches the Small Carpathian Mountains on the North-West and the Danube hilly area on the North-East. In the South it borders on Hungary and Austria. This area belongs to the hottest and driest in Slovakia. The Rye Island lies between the Small Danube and the Danube. It is considered to be the biggest river island in Europe, its area is 1600km2, the average temperature is 10°C. Under the Rye Island there are extensive supplies of groundwater, it is a protected water management area. The river Danube flows through the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. The Danube is the second largest river in Europe and is used for shipment, production of electric power (hidroelectric power station – Hidroelectric power station Gabčíkovo), watering and also for recreational and sporting purposes. It flows into the Black sea. Meanders, that are surrounded with bottomland forrests, create great possibilities of rafting, sports and fishing. Preserved touristic remarkablenesses (water mills), recreational areas, accomodation and boarding possibilities. The Small Danube flows into the river Váh by Kolárovo.
